AORA

While all around us are wearing their finest clothing, emotional nudity can be extremely painful

2012, performance

Nominated for the Kölner Tanz- und Theaterpreis (Cologne Dance and Theatre Prize) 2012

AORA is a work about the inevitable and destructive power of disaster on human relationships. Four performers are gathered in one room, compelled by the rules of their strict environment, tied to one another. They accumulate energy reciprocally; power one another; pant and convulse. The figures exhibit powerful and vigorous attitudes, which are juxtaposed with waning displays of force and vitality: a metaphor for failed power relations and the influence of forces crisis on human ability. In AORA, Shemesh’s characters reveal themselves through extreme movements: ecstatic shaking and shivering, stillness and sudden lift. Harmonic, tender or sequential movements are disrupted by quivering and devastating collapses, belying any sense of normalcy.

“The dreamlike dance painting shows cracks, reveals the fragility of a social fabric and places beauty directly next to its destruction… Shemesh combines dance, music (Nico Stallmann) and interior design (Ronni Shendar) into a symbiotic aesthetic. We can only hope that the city of Cologne can hold such an extraordinary artist.”
